ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis Zoo announced the passing of its 19-year-old African lion, Cabara, Wednesday afternoon.

According to the zoo, Cabara had to be humanely euthanized Tuesday after suffering from an advanced liver disease.

“The Zoo’s expert Animal Care and the Animal Health teams provided excellent care for Cabara throughout her lifetime. She was loved by many caring individuals: staff and guests alike,” the Saint Louis Zoo said.

Cabara was moved to St. Louis from Bassel Zoo in Switzerland when she was 18 months old. At the Saint Louis Zoo, she was paired with male lion Ingozi, and they raised several litters together, the zoo said. Eventually Cabara and Ingozi became grandparents and great-grandparents.

“Cabara had an amazing, feisty, and discerning personality,” the Saint Louis Zoo said in a release. “Cabara will be greatly missed by her care team and all who knew her. Her legacy, and Ingozi’s, will live on through our memories and future generations of their beautiful species.”
