BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Just before 8 p.m. Thursday at the Walmart on Greenmount Commons, police were alerted to a stabbing that left a man and a woman injured.
One of the victims was left with a punctured lung. The male victim’s brother, Darwin, said his brother works for Walmart, serving as an independent contractor, and was working at the time of the incident when a stranger allegedly stabbed him in his back.
“While he was stabbed and lying on the ground, he hurt another victim. A lady screamed out because she got stabbed in the chest,” Darwin said. “He has a punctured lung right now and they have a tube in his lung to stop the blow-up and (are) filling it up right now. He had to go right into surgery.”
According to police, the suspect did know the victims.
Loved ones are calling for justice surrounding this incident.
“I want him to go to jail—that’s the main thing,” Darwin said. “I don’t want (the stabbings) swept under the rug. I’m scared to walk around the store. It’s a scary thing. My brother was just doing his work and then he got stabbed deeply.”
Walmart released a statement about the incident.
“Violence like this is unacceptable. We appreciate police and first responders for acting quickly. We’re cooperating with the police in their investigation,” the company wrote.
Police confirmed that both victims were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The case was turned over to the state’s attorney’s office, where charges are expected to be filed.
The suspect is currently in custody.
