ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. – A Belleville man faces six felony charges, including attempted murder, after he allegedly took an officer’s gun and fired a shot during a child welfare check earlier this week.

Chase A. Powers, 28, is behind bars on charges of attempted murder, disarming a police officer, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery, aggravated battery of a police officer and being a felon in posssesion of a weapon.

On Thursday, Illinois State Police and an investigator with the Illinois Department of Children and Family responded to a home in the 700 block of South 15th Street to check on the well-being of a child.

When they arrived, Powers was at the home, and an altercation occurred between him and investigators. The situation escalated to Powers disarming one officer during a struggle and that firearm being discharged, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

No one was hurt, though Powers was taken into custody a short time later. He was booked into the St. Clair County Jail.
