ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. — St. Charles County was recently awarded for using a new technology at intersections, allowing first responders to pass through on a green light.

The county was awarded “transportation achievement of the year” for using a technology that coordinates green lights at intersections for prioritization of police, fire, and ambulance vehicles during emergencies.

The system was first implemented in June 2022 and is the largest in the state, covering 351 intersections and 200 vehicles equipped with the cloud-based technology.

According to a news release, the St. Charles County Ambulance District alone responds to around 47,000 calls a year.

The $829,000 system was paid for by 80% federal grants and 20% local funds.
