ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding pet owners of possible coyote encounters in the St. Louis area this time of year.
According to MDC, February is the peak of breeding season for coyotes and continues into March, marking a major spike in coyote activity throughout the area.
The MDC said unlike other kinds of wildlife, coyotes do coexist with people in many places, including urban spaces, golf courses, and suburban wooded areas.
Coyotes are also known as scavengers and will eat anything, from foxes, mice, and rabbits to fruits, vegetables, and insects.
How do you keep pets safe?
MDC warns pet owners to be aware of the areas where coyotes are known to live and protect pets from those areas.
To prevent any potential encounters, MDC recommends making sure a yard or property has no food sources available to coyotes and do not leave any pet food outside. Even bird feeders should be secured as they attract rodents, further attracting coyotes.
If an issue arises, MDC said to use scare tactics. Scare tactics include yelling or making other loud noises, even throwing rocks to prevent the coyotes from coming back.
