ST. LOUIS – BJC HealthCare employees are on edge after yet another wave of car break-ins at hospital parking garages—this time at Parkview Tower and the Euclid Garage.

Employees say they don’t feel safe, and some are even considering quitting.

So far, FOX 2 knows that employees received an email Saturday morning about the break-ins, but many employees said they do not believe BJC’s claim that safety is a top priority.

This is the second round of break-ins in just one month, and workers say this has been an issue for years.

At the start of February, employees say more than 60 cars were broken into at other BJC garages. Many say this has been happening since at least 2022.

“I’m scared. I don’t want to go to work and a lot of my co-workers say if their cars are broken into, they’re done,” said one BJC employee. “They’re quitting because they are over this; no one feels safe.”

Employees said they have seen no changes in security since the first wave of break-ins, and they claim BJC has been vague about any new safety measures.

“All people know is cars are getting broken into and we hear nothing. So we think nothing is being done,” said another anonymous BJC employee.

Some employees say they’ve encountered homeless individuals near their cars.

Others say they only see one security guard driving around. Employees want security guards stationed at garage entrances 24/7 instead.

“It’s unacceptable for this to keep happening on the same campus in all different garages. Employees, patients and their family members for an highly ranked hospital in the United States—this shouldn’t be happening,” said an anonymous BJC employee. “Families shouldn’t have to worry about their cars being broken into when they are on the campus.”

Police say a small group is responsible for these break-ins. Surveillance footage has helped with the investigation, and officers are working with BJC to strengthen security plans.

“We sent those out internally to our officers to see if there are any leads we can develop from that before sharing with the public to see… asking for their help,” said Sgt. Sean Mazzola, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s deputy director of Public Affairs.

Police confirmed that 13 cars were broken into this past weekend.

No suspect information is available yet, but officers say the main target is firearms.

“We know that these people are looking for firearms and, unfortunately, they did get another firearm this weekend. So my message to the community is please don’t leave anything of value, especially firearms, in your vehicle,” Mazzola said.

BJC HealthCare responded to FOX 2 with a statement.

“On behalf of BJC HealthCare:

Overnight Feb. 28-March 1, there were numerous vehicle break-ins in the Parkview Tower and Euclid garages on campus. Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s Hospital Public Safety are investigating in cooperation with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Hospital Public Safety officers monitor and patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in cooperation with St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.”

Police said these break-ins are happening both in the city and the county.

Officials are continuing to meet with Barnes-Jewish hospital leadership to review patrol strategies and camera placements—but employees said they need to see them before they feel safe again.
