WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – Parents are alarmed following Thursday’s daycare molestation charges out of Webster Groves.
The daycare called “Here We Grow” sits in the shadow of the Webster Groves Police Department.
Christopher Titus, 46, is charged with molestation—a man we have confirmed is related to the daycare owners by marriage and was reportedly fired by the center after Titus was criminally charged.
“He made admissions admitting to several sex acts with the child,” said Assistant St. Louis County Prosecutor John Schlesinger.
FOX 2 reached out to an expert on how to approach children in the best way.
The Children’s Advocacy Center specializes in combating child trauma and advocates at the center often help police talk to child victims.
Megan Marietta advises teaching children boundaries without using slang. Instead, call the body parts what they are.
“Really give them the language that’s understood universally,” Marietta said.
That way it will be easier to catch if a child tries speaking out about something inappropriate. Then if they do, Marietta said you should remain calm.
“Thanking them for telling you. Letting them know you’re proud of them for telling you and then going ahead and having your emotional reaction outside of their presence,” she said.
That’s partly why the advocacy center has a calm and peaceful space. Marietta says guardians want children to know you’re there to listen.
“Sometimes children have a difficult time understanding that you’re upset about what you’ve heard or what’s happened and not upset with them,” Marietta said.
Defendant Titus is locked up on a $1 million cash-only bond, with a hearing date next week.
