TROY, Ill. – A major thoroughfare in Troy, Illinois, remains closed for continued cleanup following a fuel leak over the weekend.

Chief Darren Davis, Troy Fire Protection District, said South Main Street between West Fitch Street and Route 162 will remain closed through Sunday evening and possibly Monday.

The leak happened Saturday morning at the BP gas station in the 800 block of South Main. Firefighters received word of a fuel leak just before 8:30 a.m.

Firefighters quickly realized the leak was coming from an underground fuel tank and scrambled to prevent fuel from entering the storm sewer system and spreading to a nearby creek.

Chief Davis said the fire district requested help from the Madison County HazMat Team, Troy Public Works Department, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Businesses north of the leak were evacuated and asked to close for the rest of the day. Storm drains, businesses, and surrounding waterways were checked for gas and fumes. Chief Davis said that process will continue for the foreseeable future.

The fire chief said the leaking gas did not enter the city’s water service and that public water is safe to use. Residents may still smell some gas fumes in the area of the leak on Sunday due to the current weather.
