VALLEY PARK, Mo. – Valley Park is making waves—literally.

A flood-prone stretch of road in valley park is once underwater again—and it’s causing concern for both commuters and nearby business owners after a weekend of steady rainfall.

Highway 141 at Interstate 44 was shut down at noon today as the Meramec River continues to swell from days of heavy rain. Southbound lanes closed first, followed by the Northbound side. Some ramps will stay open through Monday—but that could change quickly.

The Meramec River is expected to crest Tuesday morning over 28  feet —at major flood stage.

Several areas around Valley Park are completely flooded, including an open field near vance avenue that now looks like a creek or small lake. However, the good news is that most main roads through the city remain clear for the time being. Residents and business owners remember when previous years of flooding were worse than this.

“Well, after the last time, I understand I wasn’t here but my brother was here and he told me that the water came all the way up to this window over here and the whole store was flooded,” said Muhyideen, Corner Market Owner.

He owns the corner market nearby from the floodgates on St. Louis avenue—and while the water hasn’t hit like it did in years past, businesses are still taking a hit.

For now, drivers are urged to avoid this area—and officials are urging the public to never try to cross flooded roads.
