KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A 24-year-old man was sentenced on Monday for the killing of a Carthage, Missouri woman in Miami County, Kansas last year.

Miami County Chief Judge Amy Harth sentenced Gavino McJunkins-Macias, of Carthage, to 10 years and three months in prison for the charge of second-degree murder.

McJunkins-Macias pleaded guilty to the charge back in February, according to court documents.

Carthage, Missouri police officers found the victim, 24-year-old Kenia Lopez, dead inside a camper on June 13, 2024.

Court documents say McJunkins-Macias was the victim’s husband.

Investigators believe Lopez was killed in Louisburg, Kansas, on Metcalf Road. Her body and the camper were then driven to Carthage.

McJunkins-Macias was then located and taken into custody in Jasper County, Missouri.

Court documents say he left the victim’s body in the camper for about 3 1/2 hours while he “met with his family and handled other business.”
