MADISON COUNTY, Ill. No injuries were reported after an Amtrak train struck a vehicle early Tuesday morning in Alton.
According to the Alton Police Department, the crash took place shortly before 5 a.m. in the area of the 3300 block of College Avenue. The train involved in the crash was traveling from St. Louis to Chicago.
Ahead of the crash, police were contacted that a vehicle had crashed through a protective fence near an Amtrak station and had become stuck on the railroad tracks.
Police reported that they contacted Union Pacific about the vehicle on the tracks in an attempt to shut down the railroad. Despite these efforts, the Amtrak train, containing at least 35 passengers, struck the vehicle.
The vehicle stuck on the tracks was believed to be unoccupied, police said. Authorities are actively working to locate the driver of the vehicle. No passengers on the Amtrak or officers responding to the scene were injured after the crash, according to police.
