ST. LOUIS – The Office of the Mayor announced today in a press release that it has shut down St. Louis City’s building stabilization program, saying it was “poorly executed.”

“This building stabilization program was well-intentioned but, unfortunately, very poorly executed,” said Mayor Cara Spencer.

According to the office, the City used the program to make repairs to private properties and bill property owners.

The Mayor’s Office says it’s collaborating with the Assessor’s Office and City Counselor’s Office to lift any remaining liens that were a result of the program.

Mayor Spencer cited past media coverage that brought light to issues within the program.

She also noted how the City was billing property owners for work that was never done, causing stress to communities that were already impacted by blight.

“Given the widespread and well-documented problems, we had no choice but to end this program and re-evaluate more effective ways of making much-needed investments in north St. Louis,” Spencer said.
