ST. LOUIS – A suspect in last month’s shooting in Hyde Park appeared in court Tuesday afternoon.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened on April 4 in the 1400 block of Mallinckrodt Street.

Police said Jaylen Scott, 18, was with a friend that evening who had previously been in a relationship with one of the two victims.

Scott got into an argument with both victims, who then left the area in a vehicle. Scott and his friend followed in an SUV, took out firearms, and began shooting at the victims who were inside their vehicle. One of the victims suffered a gunshot wound to their leg.

Police said mobile phone data placed Scott near the crime scene. After obtaining a search warrant, police went to Scott’s residence, where they discovered a gun matching the shell casings recovered from the crime scene.

According to investigators, one of the weapons found at Scott’s home had been modified with an illegal sere switch, allowing the gun to be fired as an automatic weapon.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Scott with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action, one count of unlawful use of a weapon, and one count of unlawful possession of an illegal weapon. Scott was jailed without bond.
