CLAYTON, Mo. – There’s a saying that goes, “there’s always more than what meets the eye,” and for a recently-listed Clayton penthouse, the sentence stands true.
For $5 million, it is what realtor Wayne Norwood calls “a limited product.”
Driving along Interstate 64 near South Brentwood Boulevard, it’s a building hard to miss in the Clayton skyline—especially as the top three penthouses in The Plaza in Clayton are eye level to the Arch.
Now, one of those three is looking for the first new owner since its creation in 2001.
While the space holds four bedrooms, five bathrooms and two terraces in nearly 7,000 square-feet, it is the smaller, intentional details that hold the value 29 floors up in the sky. From the refined European feel to each space, floor-to-ceiling mirrors to reflect more light in, a variety of quality, natural stone and wood, and much more—it was all sourced from inspiration 24 years ago that has never needed major renovations since.
The highlight of the penthouse is the view, where you get a different look of each part of the city from every side of the building, including downtown St. Louis and in the heart of Clayton, granting the “city feel” with the sights and sounds.
In 2009, the high-rise kitchen also won an award for “Kitchen of the Year” in the K+BB Magazine. The architect behind the kitchen, James Howard, was named the 2010 pinnacle of design winner from NKBA Magazine as well as the Consumers’ Choice Award Kitchen winner.
Although the large space holds an open concept, the original layout still allows for an intimate space, which Norwood says has been a stand-out aspect among showings.
“Not one person wants to change anything about the structure and the layout. That’s a statement,” he said. “It means that you were so ahead of the curve when you built it, that it withstood the test of time.”
Additionally, Norwood said one of the unexpected best qualities of the property is that there are no unknowns when someone else will take it over.
“It’s possibly one of the most straightforward properties I’ve ever listed in 18 years. What they would find when they came in here is that there are not only no surprises, but everything is exactly what they were expecting when they walked in,” he said.
Beyond the 29th level, the owners will be able to enjoy an outdoor pool and terrace a few floors above street level with an abundance of greenery, valet parking that comes with four spaces, a fitness room, and a doorman.
As the space has only held one family, Norwood added it is a bittersweet transition for the current owner.
“You buy a house to make a home, and (they) made a home… I always say ‘You created memories with your family—it’s time to let someone else create their own,” he said.
