ST. LOUIS – Olympic gymnast Simone Biles took to the podium today for Washington University, delivering her commencement speech for the class of 2025.
Although conditions were as rainy as can be, the weather did not stop Biles from speaking to over three thousand graduates and their families. At the commencement, Biles also received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
“You are elite students,” Biles said to those graduating. “While I can claim a few firsts in my sport, I know that some of you are firsts when it comes to graduating.”
Reflecting on the idea of life itself, Biles did not shy away from the difficulties one may face when it comes to achieving success.
Although many claim her as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, Biles shared that she faced struggles when being under pressure.
“Being the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) was never the goal. All I ever wanted was to be the greatest Simone that I could be,” Biles shared. “If there’s one thing that I know little about, it’s pressure.”
During her speech, she encouraged those in attendance to take a deep breath and exhale, signifying that it’s okay to breathe when life gives you hardships.
Her secrets to success include:
- “You only control yourself”
- “Stay creative”
- “Work can’t be everything”
- “Mental wellness matters”
