ST. LOUIS – It may be one of the most visible signs of community support since the May 16 St. Louis tornado. On Saturday, an army of volunteers gathered at the Urban League’s headquarters in north St. Louis to provide much-needed aid and hope to storm victims.

Volunteers flocked to the Urban League’s headquarters for the first of four large-scale giveaways for storm victims.

There was a massive turnout, both for volunteers and people in need. A long line of cars arrived with families in need of help, some waiting as early as 4 a.m. for a noon giveaway event. Organizers expected more than 3,000 cars.

“This is inspiring, but we got to be able to harness this. Let’s keep the spirit of unity and togetherness going,” said James Clark, vice president of public safety with the Urban League. “This is a demonstration that shows a need in our community, and we cannot ignore it.”
