ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The May 16 tornado that hit the St. Louis region is still delaying the reopening of two schools in Clayton.

Announced by the Clayton School District, Captain Elementary and Wydown Middle have been closed ever since May 16, saying that they are unable to safely reopen.

The May 16 tornado claimed the lives of five individuals and also impacted many in the region. Thousands of buildings were also damaged, with many experiencing power outages.

Power outages were another issue both schools experienced.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, neither school will be able to safely reopen,” the Clayton School District shared on social media.

Although a date for reopening both schools has not been declared, the Clayton School District says it will keep those posted on future plans.

Families of students at both schools are urged to check their email for more details.

This Friday will be the last day of school for the entire school district.
