MADISON COUNTY, Mo. – The Fredericktown R-1 School District will be shut down Friday due to the effects of a facility fire in Fredericktown.

The school district will be closed due to concerns on the air quality, wind direction, and the smoke that will be created from “suppressive treatment at the Critical Minerals site” on Friday, the district said in a social media post.

The closure comes after a massive fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at the Critical Mineral Recovery facility, a battery processing plant in Fredricktown, just south of St. Louis. The fire released thick, toxic smoke into the air, prompting an immediate response from emergency teams.
