ST. LOUIS – A Ferguson police officer who suffered a serious brain injury three months ago will be discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, FOX 2 News has learned.
On Aug. 9, protesters gathered outside the Ferguson Police Department to mark the 10th anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown. During that demonstration, some protesters shook and damaged the entryway fence outside the department parking lot.
Officer Travis Brown was on the arrest team dispatched to apprehend the individuals responsible. During the fracas, one protester shoulder-tackled Brown, knocking him to the pavement and leaving him with a brain injury.
The individual who shouldered Brown, Elijah M. Gantt of East St. Louis, was taken into custody. Two other officers helped arrest Gantt. At least two other officers suffered minor injuries. Several protesters were arrested.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Gantt with first-degree assault, resisting arrest, first-degree property damage, and two counts of fourth-degree assault.
