ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A tenant in a Ferguson apartment building was getting ready to shower when a gunshot ripped through his bathroom and struck the wall just above the shower head. One person was taken into custody in an alleged accidental shooting.
According to the Ferguson Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened on Nov. 11.
Police said the victim went to the apartment below and confronted two women and a man in that unit. The victim claimed all three had the smell of alcohol on them. One of the women said they didn’t know a round was in the chamber and that the gun had been disposed of.
The victim contacted police, who went to the apartment the next day. The same woman let officers into the unit.
Police said the man, identified as Tony L. Jefferson Jr. (age not provided), was laying on the couch with an alcoholic beverage nearby. Jefferson allegedly told police he could not remember what had happened the night before because he drank too much.
The two women in the apartment told police Jefferson had fired the gun accidentally and that they’d tossed the gun in the woods behind a nearby fast-food restaurant.
Jefferson was taken into custody. Police said Jefferson has a 2022 conviction for second-degree domestic assault and thus is not allowed to own or possess a firearm.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Jefferson with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Jefferson remains jailed on a $30,000 cash-only bond. He’s due in court on Nov. 20 for a bond reduction hearing.
