ST. LOUIS — Winter weather has created dangerous road conditions across the metro area, leaving dozens of vehicles stuck this morning. Major interstates remain snow-covered despite nonstop efforts by road crews.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has deployed hundreds of trucks, with crews working in 12-hour shifts around the clock. Snow and sleet have been falling steadily since Saturday night, continuing through Sunday and into this morning. Officials say their primary goal has been to keep the snow and ice layer as thin as possible.
MoDOT urges drivers to stay off the roads if they can. While plows have made some progress, overpasses, ramps, and highways are still treacherous. Numerous crashes, slide-offs, and stalled cars have been reported throughout the storm.
MoDOT Maintenance Engineer Bob Becker explained that crews will begin applying chemicals to treat the roads after the snow slows down later today. Until then, travel is highly challenging and should be avoided if possible.
