ST. LOUIS – The man whose businesses were severely damaged after police say a St. Peters resident allegedly set them on fire after being denied alcohol in Puerto Rico is reacting to the news of her arrest. He and others are also hopeful a judge will deny Danielle Bertothy bond at a detention hearing later this week.

Bertothy, 36, was indicted by a federal grand jury and subsequently arrested last week. She made her first appearance in federal court on Friday.

Bertothy was caught on surveillance cameras carrying a container of gasoline and setting a bar, restaurant, store and hotel ablaze just after midnight on Jan. 2, endangering the lives of more than 20 guests.

After being interviewed by police in the following days, investigators say Bertothy cut her vacation short and fled the island. She was arrested back in Missouri on Thursday.

Owner Angel Luis Marrero said he lost almost everything he has worked so hard for in the fire. It came just one night after his family and friends came together to ring in the new year at the hotel. The phone call he received about the fire and the subsequent days have completely upended his life.

“It was a nightmare,” Marrero said. “For me, it was a horror movie.”

Investigators allege Bertothy was intoxicated when restaurant employees denied her alcohol. That’s when she’s accused of becoming belligerent and being kicked out of the establishment multiple times.

Marrero said he still does not understand why someone would burn down his business over something as petty as being denied alcohol.

“That lady, without any reason—revenge, I don’t know—burned our place and turned our small piece of paradise into hell,” he said.

Bertothy has been indicted for arson by a federal grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico. Earlier this month, ATF agents served a search warrant at her St. Peters home.

Marrero said he’s grateful people are helping him with donations to a GoFundMe he’s set up. He is hopeful more people can lend him a helping hand so he can rebuild his business, as he said insurance where he is located is unaffordable on the island following the devastation from Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Marrero tells FOX 2 that unfortunately, someone else unrelated to him set up a donation page that does not benefit him or his family. That page has gone viral, raising more than $150,000. His, meanwhile, is just over $15,000 as of Monday night.

Marrero said he has a message for Bertothy.

“You have no right, and nobody has the right to do this and potentially kill people,” he said. “I completely have faith that she’s going to face justice.”

Investigators have requested a federal judge to deny Bertothy bond, citing her public safety and flight risk. She has a detention hearing set for Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 11:30 a.m. at the federal courthouse in downtown St. Louis.

Bertothy faces one count of arson. If convicted, she faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.
