ST. LOUIS – On the coldest day of the new year, ice is the major obstacle to maneuver for everyone in the greater St. Louis area, but some souls are brave enough to face these low temperatures.
Between treacherous, icy-covered sidewalks and frozen mounds of snowy ice that could cause a hubcap to come off, there’s many frigid hazards in place for civilians.
In this case, an off-road obstacle that wasn’t avoided for a driver, fortunately no one was injured.
Cold temps are not an issue for some, such as Ceceilia George. “No problem,” she said.
George braved the cold. “There’s a tent over my head, and I feel I’m very fortunate to be able to come out in this cold.”
“We’ve had people come in today and buy sweet potatoes and turnips and we will ask what you are you making and they will say, ‘Oh, I’m making soup or celery and carrots to make stock,'” Roger’s Produce Assistant Manager Jessica Clones said. “It’s just kind of fun noticing everyone is doing the same thing we are all battening down the hatches.”
At Roger’s Produce in Webster Groves, customers are not deterred by the deadly cold.
“I love this place and I’ve been here coming here many years and I love going to small places and that’s what brought me here today in the cold,” says George.
“Someone’s going to sell the produce so we are happy to have people come in and we get a little bit longer to chitchat so it’s nice and we are all commiserating about how cold it is,” says Clones.
Something to consider over a nice warm bowl of soup this evening; temperatures will be rising.
