WRIGHT CITY, Mo. – Fire crews in Warren County battled a large, three-alarm fire caused by an explosion at a warehouse in Wright City Tuesday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. following the explosion at Universal Galvanizing, a metal finishing facility, just south of Interstate 70 in Wright City.

Fire and EMS crews spent several hours on the scene, at first battling the massive flames and then the bitter cold temperatures as the investigation continued.

The fire included potentially hazardous materials at a facility located in a rural area featuring narrow access points. Warren County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Sharp said crews were also forced to take Tuesday’s single-digit temperatures into account as they battled the flames.

Our FOX 2 SkyFOX captured a shot of a rehab bus for crews to cycle into to stay warm.

“We started to rotate folks in and out for rehab,” Sharp said. “We were able to sort of cycle through to take the load off of folks who had been in the weather for a while.”

No one was injured in the fire. Crews put out a half-mile evacuation zone. There were no other properties within the area, according to officials.

Warren County EMA said crews from St. Charles, Lincoln, and Warren counties and hazardous material teams remained at the scene as of 4 p.m.

Runoff was contained, and initial air monitoring did not reveal any hazards from the incident. Officials said there is no imminent danger to the public.

The building suffered significant damage, but Sharp confirmed it’s still structurally sound. The State Fire Marshal is still investigating what caused the explosion.
