MACOUPIN COUNTY, Ill. – On Sunday afternoon, patrons stopped at the Soulard bar Bastille to remember one of the establishment’s popular bartenders.

Chuck Parrino Jr. was said to be dependable, punctual, and well liked by coworkers and bosses alike.

“Chuck was a show-up-early guy,” Jeff Wicker, Bastille co-owner, said. “A good worker; always some help.”

When Parrino didn’t show up to work on time Friday, Wicker said he knew something was wrong.

“I started calling his phone,” Wicker said. “Called it repeatedly and texted and was like, ‘Hey, where are you?’ ‘This isn’t like you.’ I didn’t get any responses.”

After driving by Parrino’s residence in Macoupin County and the home of another person who knew Parrino and, after having no luck, Wicker called authorities.

Law enforcement found the body of a man inside the Bunker Hill home. The Macoupin County Coroner’s Office pronounced the person dead at 1:38 a.m. on Sunday.

Wicker later received confirmation from a family member that Parrino was the deceased individual.

“He was an asset and it’s a loss,” Wicker said. “He told me he loved working here and I said, ‘We love having you.’ He had been here. It’s just sick. Sickening.”

Wicker said they’ll hold an informal event in Parrino’s honor next Sunday at Bastille.

An autopsy will be performed Monday.

The Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department is receiving assistance from the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Division in the investigation. A person is in custody.
