COLUMBIA, Mo. – An adult man has been charged after allegedly entering a University of Missouri sorority house Tuesday evening.
Court records state that 41-year-old Jeffrey Wheeland Jr. told police he was dropped off at the University Hospital by the Columbia Police Department for treatment when he began to flee due to feeling unsafe and feeling as if he was “being chased by people who wanted to kill him.”
He proceeded to run into the area of campus of Greek life residences and saw a back door open to the basement of the Sigma Kappa house as someone walked out. He managed to enter just before it closed around 7 p.m.
The individual who opened the door told police that Wheeland Jr. explained why he was there and asked to call police. While the witness asked him to stay outside, Wheeland Jr. blocked the door from closing and pushed past the witness to get into the house.
Wheeland Jr. then grabbed knives from the kitchen and went back to the basement to the study room, where one woman was studying, a probable cause statement said. He allegedly told the woman he was not going to hurt her, then barricaded himself into the room by locking the door and placing a chair in front of the door.
The woman told police she was too scared to ask Wheeland Jr. to leave in fear of retaliation. She then texted friends to call 911.
When officers arrived at the scene, they saw Wheeland Jr. in the room with the woman as the door was still locked and barricaded, and he had several knives in his hands. When police commanded him to drop the knives, he complied and was taken into custody.
Records state Wheeland Jr. is facing charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, and fourth-degree assault for the incident. He is being held without bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 27.
