ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A suspected car thief remains hospitalized after being shot over the weekend during the crime.
According to the Maryland Heights Police Department’s probable cause statement, the theft and shooting happened on Saturday, March 1. Police did not provide a more specific time and location.
Officers responded to a shooting call and met with the victim, who told them Jalal N. Shahid (age not provided) was at his home when Shahid took out a gun, pointed it at the victim, and demanded the man’s credit cards and car keys. The victim complied at Shahid left the residence.
However, police said the victim retrieved his own firearm and confronted Shahid outside.
Shahid, who police said was in the process of the taking the victim’s car, raised his firearm toward the victim.
The victim opened fire and struck Shahid in the arm and leg, police said. Shahid managed to get in the victim’s car and drove off.
Shahid later called an ambulance for himself and was taken to a hospital, police said.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Shahid with first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, stealing a motor vehicle, stealing – all other property, and unlawful use of a weapon. Once Shahid is discharged from the hospital, he’ll be held without bond until a court appearance.
Shahid had been out on bond for methamphetamine possession. He also has a prior felony conviction from 2014.
