ST. LOUIS — Dr. Paban Saha, an Electrophysiologist with Prairie Cardiovascular, siscusses atrial fibrillation.
What is Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib)?
A-fib is a common heart condition where the heart beats irregularly and often too fast. Imagine a marching band where each musician plays at their own pace – that’s what happens during A-fib. This disrupts normal blood flow, increasing the risk of clots that can lead to stroke or heart failure.
The Role of Electrophysiology
Electrophysiology (EP) is a specialized field of cardiology that diagnoses and treats abnormal heart rhythms. Electrophysiologists use advanced mapping techniques to identify and correct faulty electrical signals causing A-fib.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Rapid or fluttering heartbeat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue or weakness
Why Treatment Matters
While A-fib isn’t usually life-threatening, untreated cases can lead to serious complications. Treatment options include:
- Medications: To control heart rate and prevent clots.
- Cardioversion: To reset the heart’s rhythm.
- Ablation Therapy: To correct abnormal signals.
Take Action for Your Heart
If you experience symptoms, talk to your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can keep your heart marching to the right beat.
