ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. – A Belleville, Illinois, man is facing attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting three Fairview Heights police officers over the weekend.
According to a statement from the Illinois State Police, the shooting happened Saturday, May 17, along Potomac Drive. Three officers had responded to a report of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. The officers were shot around 9:45 p.m.
One officer was shot in the face and required emergency surgery. She remains in critical condition. The second officer was shot in the arm, where the bullet broke a bone. That officer was treated and released from the hospital. The third officer was shot in the back, but his bulletproof vest kept him safe. He was treated and released.
The ISP said Elijah Thompson, 22, was arrested at the scene and his firearm recovered.
The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Thompson on Monday with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery, and one count of resisting arrest.
