BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Myra Jackson is waiting on an important letter. But there’s one problem—she hasn’t received mail in 15 days.
“This is a problem because these are bills,” the Belleville resident said. “I have two checks that are supposed to be coming. I’ve been to the Dutch Hollow location, and no one would talk to me about it. I don’t know what else to do.”
Her neighbors in Dutch Hollow are in the same, mail-less boat.
“I know that it’s been especially hard with the ice and snow that we’ve had, especially the first couple of days,” Belleville resident Erica Oliver said. “After the first couple of days, it seems the rest of us had to adapt and adjust—still go to work and get the job done… so it seems feasible for the mail to have been delivered at least this past week.”
Tim Norman with the United States Postal Service responded with the following statement:
“Our carriers are working each day and attempting to access mailboxes when it is safe to do so. We continue to ask customers to create a clear path to their mailboxes.
For mailboxes located on the house, please clear a path on the sidewalk and steps leading to the mailbox. For curbside mailboxes, please clear a path to approach and exit the mailbox; generally, a car length approach and another car length to exit.
We are making every effort to expedite delivery to our customers.”
The roads look clear in Belleville. But dangerous conditions can be seen in the Dutch Hollow neighborhood.
“They say rain, sleet, or snow, the mail is always going to be delivered,” Jackson said. “Well, it’s not being delivered.”
