ST. LOUIS – Aerospace firm Boeing, one of the largest employers in the St. Louis region, is laying off more than 100 local workers.
A spokesperson from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), the union that represents Boeing St. Louis-area workers, confirmed that Boeing issued layoff notices to 111 mechanics in the region.
Boeing reportedly gave the employees a a 60-day warrant notice that the laid-off employees will be paid through January 17.
The layoff notices come as Boeing has delayed production on a high-profile 777X commercial jet. IAM says most of the St. Louis-area workers affected by layoffs worked on that program.
Reuters reports that Boeing plans to cut around 10% of its global workforce as the company navigates delays with production of the 777X jet.
FOX 2 has reached out to Boeing for further comment, but they have not replied to request for comment as of this story’s publication.
This is a developing story. FOX 2 will update as more information becomes available.
