MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office sent out a warning to its residents Tuesday morning of a scam going around their neighborhoods.

The scam involves two people going door-to-door to tell residents that they are from Ameren and they are checking for downed limbs in their backyard.

While the homeowner is distracted and outside with the first individual, the second then burglarizes the home to steal jewelry and more.

According to the sheriff’s office, true Ameren employees will be wearing a uniform, have legitimate identification, and will be driving around in an Ameren marked utility vehicle.

“Please be vigilant, and do not allow unknown people on your property or in your house,” the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

If you believe you have encountered these scammers, contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (618) 692-4433 or their anonymous tip line at (618) 296-3000.
