CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Major Case Squad is back on the ground in Cahokia Heights after another shooting involving teenagers, the second incident this year. This time two 15 year olds were injured over the weekend.
It all unfolded Saturday evening in the 100 block of Lazarcheff.
Between 6:20 and 7 p.m., Cahokia Heights Police responded to multiple reports of gunfire. When officers arrived in the neighborhood, they found two teens shot.
Both 15 year olds were rushed to the hospital, with one treated and released while the other victim is still fighting for his life.
With no immediate suspects and few details on what led up to the shooting, police called in the Major Case Squad.
Investigators shared they had a successful Monday, as they’re following up on numerous leads, but so far, they haven’t revealed much about the case, including how many times and where the critically injured teen was hit.
Neighbors in the area said they’re tired of fearing for themself and their loved ones’ safety.
Nisha is a young mother who lives in the neighborhood. She opened up about the gun violence.
“If it’s not every night, it’s every other night. I can’t have my kids outside; it’s not safe out here at all,” she said.
This double shooting marks the second time this year that gun violence has left Cahokia Heights youths impacted.
It’s a troubling trend that has law enforcement on high alert as they work to curb youth shootings in the area.
With two more teens caught in the crossfire, the push to stop the violence is stronger than ever, especially among youths who aren’t looking to be involved in the danger.
Eighteen-year-old Aalyiah was walking through the neighborhood with her 16-year-old friend Monday afternoon.
Aalyiah told FOX 2 that she stays away from guns and shared advice for her fellow peers.
“(The) best advice is to just stay to yourself; if you don’t want no problems, stay to yourself. Watch who you came with,” she said.
Investigators are turning to the public for help.
Those are urged to call the Major Case Squad at the Cahokia Heights Police Department or submit a tip through Crimestoppers for potential leads surrounding the incident.
