ST. LOUIS – For 45 years, the St. Louis Cardinals fan base has come to love their mascot, Fredbird. Now, he is in the running to make history.
It was announced Monday morning that Fredbird is among the 28 nominees this year to potentially have his name in the Mascot Hall of Fame.
This award is presented to mascots around the country and in different divisions—from MLB to colleges, the NHL and more—it is a competitive endeavor. It began in 2005 by David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic.
Fredbird is up against mascots from the University of Florida, New York Mets, Calgary Flames, Seattle Seahawks, and many others.
According to the Cardinals, Fredbird has attended more than 3,600 regular-season games and was there for three of the teams’ World Series Championships. He was inducted into St. Louis’ Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Voting for the Mascot Hall of Fame goes through May 24 online. Voters can cast one ballot a day. Inductees will be announced in June.
