WASHINGTON, Mo. – A man was beaten to death and a woman was injured during a physical assault earlier this week in Washington, Missouri, police say. A suspect has since been arrested and charged with murder.

The Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged William Jerald Vedenhaupt, 43, of Washington, Missouri, with second-degree murder and second-degree domestic assault.

The Washington Police Department reports via a news release that a 71-year-old man was killed and a 50-year-old woman was hurt in an assault Tuesday in the 400 block of Walnut Street.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found the man deceased inside the home and a woman with visible facial injuries. The woman provided information to officers that helped police identify Vedenhaupt as a suspect.

Police later found Vedenhaupt hiding in a storage building the 300 block of West 5th Street. He was taken into custody and is currently being held without bond at the Franklin County Detention Center.

Investigators determined that Vedenahupt was known to both victims. The Washington Police Department reports that a motive “has been established,” but has withheld such information at this time.

Authorities later determined that the 71-year-old man died as “a result of the assault.”
