ST. LOUIS — Saylor Fleming, the head prosecutor of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Eastern Missouri, announced Tuesday she had resigned from the position last week.

According to a U.S. Department of Justice news release, Fleming did not provide a reason for quitting though her resignation took effect at midnight on Friday. U.S. Attorney Matthew Drake, who has worked for the office since 2002, will assume Fleming’s position temporarily.

Fleming was the top federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for more than five years after she was appointed in December 2020 by former Attorney General William Barr.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to lead the United States Attorney’s Office for the last four and a half years,” Fleming said in a news release. “As a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Missouri, I have had the great fortune of working with some of the most dedicated law enforcement professionals in the country, and I am extremely grateful for the sacrifices they make every day for our safety.”

Fleming’s office oversees 49 counties and prosecutes federal crimes, including those related to terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation, firearms, and narcotics.
