ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Calvenita Brock says a family’s worst nightmare is now a reality as she mourns the loss of her daughter, 25-year-old Kelsey Elem.
St. Louis County Police say 21-year-old Martino Lewis is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and domestic assault in connection with the death of Elem.
Investigators say just after 11 p.m. on April 24, Lewis and Elem—who were in a relationship—got into a violent argument inside a home on the 5800 block of Grace Avenue in Affton.
Charging documents reveal an eyewitness overheard the fight and saw Lewis punch Elem, causing her to bleed. Moments later, police say, a gunshot rang out.
“My baby was taken away from me by a young man who was supposed to be her friend that was supposed to be taking care of her. She was not in love; it was just about the heart,” Brock said.
Family members say Elem was a strong advocate for the transgender community and known for her kindness to strangers.
“I’m asking those who can help with her burial; she does not have insurance or anything and she was a wonderful person,” Brock said.
Kendra Griffin Carter also shared memories of Kelsey.
“My son started off being her best friend at a young age; they’ve been stuck with each other ever since,” Griffin Carter said. “My son got killed in 2018. Kelsey never left my side so that’s why I’m trying to help. I know how it feels, and I know what she’s going through right now. My feelings are all over the place, but I love them.”
A Gofundme page for Kelsey has been set up to cover funeral expenses.
