UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. — Relief is on the way for residents of University City who suffered flood damage nearly three years ago, as federal officials have approved funding for voluntary buyouts of flood-damaged properties.

The city is beginning the process of appraisals and offers for more than a dozen properties affected by the flooding. This comes after more than 12 inches of rain fell in 24 hours in July 2022, causing the River Des Peres to flood and swamp homes.

Leaders in University City initially sought enough federal money to buy out 300 homes along the River Des Peres. However, state officials indicated that such an extensive flood buyout was not realistic.
