FLORISSANT, Mo. – Investigators have confirmed the identify of a Hazelwood man who died Sunday while in custody at the Florissant Police Department.
According to Mary Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Police Department, Mitchell Bergeron was found unresponsive in his cell just after 6 a.m. and pronounced dead a short time later. Bergeron was 35.
Florissant Police Chief Tim Fagan requested county detectives handle the investigation into Bergeron’s death.
“Our department takes any in-custody death seriously,” Fagan said. “We are committed to a full and transparent investigation and that’s why I have asked the St. Louis County Police Department to lead the investigation. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
Police said Bergeron was being held on a fourth-degree assault charge.
Schmitt said Bergeron’s death is being investigated as a probable suicide.
