ST. LOUIS – A former deputy with the City of St. Louis Sheriff’s Office turned himself in to investigators Thursday afternoon over allegations of sexual misconduct at the city’s jail.

James Short, 26, surrendered at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s headquarters downtown, according to police spokesman Mitch McCoy.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Short with two counts of sexual conduct in the course of public duty, both felonies.

According to the SLMPD’s probable cause statement, the incidents occurred on Jan. 8 at the City Justice Center, where Short worked. Short is accused of having sexual contact with an incarcerated woman.

Short was released on personal recognizance and order not to have any contact with the inmate. A future court date was not available in online records at the time of this story’s initial publication.
