CHATHAM, Ill. – Three children and an 18-year-old are dead after a car crashed into an after-school camp in Chatham, Illinois, on Monday.

The Sangamon County Coroner confirmed Ainsley Johnson, age 8, Rylee Britton, age 18, Kathryn Corley, age 7, and Alma Buhnerkempe, age 7, all died of multiple blunt force injuries in the crash at YNOT after-school camp. The deaths are still under investigation.

A 44-year-old woman was driving the car that hit the building. She was uninjured.

Schools closed down on Tuesday to allow the community to grieve. Hundreds of people looking for a place to go went to Scoop Du Jour Ice Cream shop.

“Small villages like ourselves, we do come in big,” co-owner Fran Abbott said.

The ice cream shop had free pizza, grief counseling, and activities for kids as everyone mourns the deaths of the four young people

“It’s one more step so we can try and help in that healing process. Everyone’s still in shock over it. It’s hard to express your feelings but talking to people does help,” Shannon McAuley, Scoop Du Jour co-owner, said.

The high school opened its auditorium and collected donations for the families. Others hung ribbons, tied them around trees and light poles or changed business signs to say, “Chatham Strong.”

“Our hearts are breaking for everybody out there. These are our friends. These are people we know from here and outside of there an these families are going to be going through a lot. Just hold onto each other and just know there’s a safe place you can come,” Abbott said.
