ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A school bus driver is charged with a felony after students say he fought with kids on the bus.
It happened Friday afternoon on a Hazelwood School District bus. According to a police probable cause statement, the driver, Lamar Murry, 51, became angry with several juveniles on the back of the bus.
Police said that Murry stopped the bus on Patterson Road near Sally Drive to confront the juveniles. He allegedly struck one victim in the face twice and held another victim face down in a seat, then punched and scratched him.
“Lamar Murry was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, both D felonies. He’s currently held on a $75,000 bond,” St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith said.
Investigators said there are videos of the incident from the bus surveillance system and ones recorded by students.
Murry’s attorney, Robert Taaffe Jr., said he is anxiously waiting to see the security video.
“I strongly suspect that what we’re going to find when we look at that video is that Mr. Murry was exercising his rights to defend himself,” he said.
Taaffe says cell phone video posted on social media raises a lot of questions, like why students are up in the driver’s area on the school bus.
“Somebody like Lamar Murry, who is 51 years old and who’s been cleared by the school to drive a bus, and who has driven for public transportation like [Atlanta-based] MARTA, doesn’t start beating on children or someone under the age of 17 for no reason,” he said.
Price Smith says prosecutors have already seen the security video.
“I know there are videos of exactly what occurred on the bus and our assistant prosecuting attorney who issued those charges, Blair Lant, was able to review all of the surveillance of what happened in making her decision to issue these serious charges,” she said.
Murry has a bond reduction hearing scheduled for next week.
