ST. LOUIS – Over 56 animals were rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) in the aftermath of the May 16 tornado that devastated the St. Louis area.
Of the 56 animals saved by the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT), 20 were strays in the impacted area.
“Responding to natural disasters throughout the United States has always been a part of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce’s work and they’re used to going into areas that have suffered devastating storms,” said Kathy Warnick, HSMO president.
Other pets were surrendered by their owners or taken in for temporary shelter.
HSMO, however, expects to take in more animals, as numbers continue to rise daily.
Despite the shelters increasing in number, HSMO has partnered with Purina. This collaboration has helped shelters provide food for their animals.
HSMO asks for donations to help the shelter. Items, such as collars, leashes and other pet supplies, are common items pet owners need when adopting their furry companion. Those can also contact 314-647-4400 for more information on how to help out.
