ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A man was charged Friday after a hit-and-run crash that left a man dead early Thursday morning in Breckenridge Hills.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the crash took place around 12:20 a.m. on St. Charles Rock Road, east of Wismer Road, involving a fully custom motorcycle and an unknown vehicle.

The crash happened while both drivers were traveling westbound on St. Charles Rock Road. The driver of the unknown vehicle, Carlos Mejia Martinez (age not provided), was struck by the motorcycle, causing the victim to be ejected from the bike, MSHP said. After the crash, officials say Martinez fled the scene.

According to MSHP, Martinez later took off the license plates on the vehicle, backed it up in his driveway, and positioned another vehicle in front of it in an attempt to hide it. Video surveillance captured the crash and the moment Martinez pulled into his driveway after fleeing the scene.

The victim in the crash, a 35-year-old man from St. Ann, was transported to a nearby hospital after the crash but would later succumb to his injuries.

Officials were able to locate Martinez and his vehicle after the crash. According to MSHP, Martinez admitted to being involved in the crash and fleeing the scene because he was scared.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Martinez with one count of leaving the scene of an accident – resulting in a death. Martinez remains jailed on a $20,000 cash-only bond, no 10%. Online court records do not say when he’ll appear before a judge.
