ST. LOUIS – A 19-year-old man faces felony charges after the shooting death of an accomplice, who was killed during an attempted armed robbery in St. Louis last summer.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office has charged Markaveon Jackson, 19, with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action in the case.

Investigators say an attempted armed robbery led to the shooting death of 15-year-old Givonni Diaz on July 20, 2024. A St. Louis police crime summary report classifies his death as a justifiable homicide, as he was allegedly shot by a passenger in a vehicle targeted in the armed robbery.

Jackson’s charges stem from an attempted overnight robbery in the 1600 block of South Broadway in St. Louis’ Kosciusko neighborhood.

Investigators say four masked suspects, including Diaz, approached two men in a car and attempted to rob them. One suspect allegedly reached inside the vehicle through an open window and began removing items that belonged to the victims, while two suspects stood behind the victims’ vehicle and held a rifle.

At some point, the passenger in the vehicle reportedly produced his own firearm and shot one suspect leaning on the window. Two of the four suspects ended up hospitalized with injuries, while Diaz died from his injuries more than two weeks later.

Jackson’s second-degree murder charge likely stems from Missouri’s felony murder rule that allows suspects to be charged with murder if a death occurs during the commission of a felony, such as the alleged armed robbery.

It’s unclear if more charges could be filed or if more arrests could be made in this case.

Jackson was booked into jail in St. Louis City without bond, according to Missouri court records.
