JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – Police are investigating after a man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Hillsboro overnight Tuesday morning.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. Monday night when officers were called for a report of a man banging on the door of a home on the 8100 block of Old Highway 21 and pointing a gun at his head.

Police said deputies and officers responded and attempted some crisis intervention over the course of three hours in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

According to police, a shootout occurred shortly after midnight overnight Tuesday morning when the man fired shots at officers, who returned fire. The man was struck and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

While securing the scene, police said investigators were able to recover the handgun the man had and later discovered multiple other firearms inside of a vehicle that was believed to have been driven to the scene by the man.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Old Highway 21 is closed between Schenk Road and Towers Road as police investigate.
