JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The new mayor of St. Louis received a warm welcome from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle Wednesday at the Missouri Capitol.
Mayor Cara Spencer was introduced in the Missouri House and spoke with Speaker of the House Jon Patterson before taking pictures with legislators and talking to representatives within the city.
Spencer also met with Gov. Mike Kehoe. She told FOX 2 that it was a productive meeting on several topics, including the state takeover of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
“We talked a lot about the state taking over the police department,” Spencer said. “My ambitions are for safer streets, clamping down on reckless driving, being a part of that transition and having the city’s voice at the table.”
She also spoke about keeping St. Louis a vibrant city and region.
“We talked about investing in downtown and how important it is for the state to have a successful downtown St. Louis,” she said. “I think the governor really gets that.”
