CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Cape Girardeau emergency crews recovered the body of a missing Illinois man Thursday morning in the Mississippi River.

According to police, officers received a call around 9 a.m. regarding a body in the water.

Crews from the police and fire department later retrieved the body, who was identified as 52-year-old Shane Barendregt.

Barendregt went missing on April 16 after falling into the river from the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge as he was being chased by police, according a FOX 2 report last week. The Illinois State Police Department conducted aerial and ground searches, but never found him.

A cause of death is still unknown, police added. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
