ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Court of Appeals has affirmed the convictions and prison sentence of Daniel Riley in a February 2023 crash that left out-of-town teenager Janae Edmondson with life-altering injuries.

On Tuesday, the Missouri Court of Appeals signed a majority opinion to affirm Riley’s convictions and prison sentence. The decision comes more than a year after Riley’s attorneys formally requested a new trial, alleging multiple legal errors.

The court ruled there was insufficient evidence to support those claims, upholding Riley’s previous convictions.

In March 2024, Riley was convicted of second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, armed criminal action, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. One month later, he was scheduled to 18 years and 9 months in state prison.

Nearly a year before that, Edmondson was visiting St. Louis with her family for a volleyball tournament. While she was walking around downtown St. Louis, a driver was speeding and failed to yield, colliding with another vehicle. That second vehicle went airborne and struck a parked car, pinning Edmondson between two vehicles. Both of her legs were amputated after the collision.

Investigators later determined that Riley, the now-convicted driver, was out on bond in a pending robbery case and had been speeding just moments before the crash.
