JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Revenue is cautioning residents to stay alert when coming across text message scams.
According to the department, countless phishing texts containing false and threatening messages have been reported. These texts often claim to be affiliated with trusted sources, such as the Missouri Department of Revenue or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
People report receiving messages that threaten to suspend their driving privileges if they fail to pay outstanding tickets or toll violations.
Regardless of the messages, they are a scam.
These trusted sources will never send payment requests via text or ask for personal information, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
To avoid becoming a victim of online scams, it is advised to never respond or click on links within the suspicious texts, as they pose security risks.
Individuals can also confirm with their local DMV regarding the scam messages for further clarification.
